COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What happens in the first session?
We understand that starting therapy can be a very nerve-wracking and unfamiliar situation. At Beretti Therapy, we want to make you as comfortable as possible. The first session is usually an opportunity for you and your therapist to get to know each other and discuss why you want to start therapy. At this point, we typically discuss the different types of therapies. At all points of the process, we try to ensure collaboration. We want to be sure that you are happy with the decisions made. However, no decisions are ever set in stone! Therapy is an opportunity to have open conversations safely and compassionately. Usually, in the first session, 'therapy agreement' would be discussed. This contract will outline confidentiality and privacy, the agreed appointments, and session fees. You can retain a copy of the agreement and refer to it at any point.
How often would I meet my therapist?
Changing your life can be difficult and requires commitment and regular support. For this reason, at Beretti Therapy, we prefer to see clients every week, on the same day, and at the same time. Such consistency provides structure and predictability to the therapeutic process, helping you to establish a routine that can contribute to better emotional and mental health. Knowing when to expect your sessions can reduce anxiety and uncertainty. Secondly, it ensures a dedicated and uninterrupted time slot for your sessions, supporting the therapeutic journey and relationship with your therapist. Ultimately, this regularity is a valuable tool in the therapeutic process, fostering trust, accountability, and positive outcomes. However, at Beretti Therapy, we understand that life is unpredictable and busy. We, therefore, aim to be as flexible and accommodating as possible. The regularity and timing of the session will be discussed in your first session.
Am I going to have to do work outside of sessions?
Coming to therapy is not always enough. It is essential to be motivated to take the discussions that have been had in the therapy session and apply them to your day-to-day life. This can sometimes be the most challenging work. However, at Beretti Therapy, we always take a compassionate, empathetic and patient stance towards supporting someone in making changes. Some types of therapy, like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, rely heavily on doing work outside of sessions. However, at Beretti Therapy, we always want to ensure that the type of therapy is helpful to you.

At Beretti Therapy, we are trained to amend our therapy styles to suit your needs. If you find that we are still not a good fit and you feel strongly about stopping, we will discuss the best steps forward, such as referring you to another clinician or service.
